Giving to St. Lawrence
Family Estate Planning Benefits SLU with $4.2 Million

The University received word that the last stage of wonderful family charitable planning was coming its way as this newsletter was going to press.

Marcia Thompson Dawson ’48 passed away in May of 2010.  Her death meant that St. Lawrence would benefit from her and her parents’ charitable estate plans.  Her mother and father, Richmond and Marion Thompson, had established charitable trusts that would mature on Marcia’s death, and Marcia herself had her own charitable plan for the University. By the end of this year, the distributions from all three estate plans will provide the University with approximately $4.2 million in unrestricted support.

Marcia had been a “quiet” supporter of the University, keeping herself informed of St. Lawrence’s progress from a distance through the St. Lawrence magazine and newsletters and from conversations with her close St. Lawrence friends. Retired from the New York Times Company, Golf Digest Division, she lived in Darien, Conn. An English major, she had been president of Alpha Delta Pi sorority in college, and was a member of the Alumni Council in the 1980s.

The University is greatly honored that she and her family believed in the value of a St. Lawrence education.  Their generosity will enable us to continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students.
