Welcome to the GIS Program at St. Lawrence University
The GIS Program at St. Lawrence University is one of many services offered by the University Libraries. Located on the top floor of the Launders Science Library, we provide instructional, technical and research support to the St. Lawrence University community in the use of geospatial software and technology.
The GIS Program Welcomes the New GIS/GPS Technician
The GIS Program at St. Lawrence welcomes Louise Gava to our staff as the GPS/GIS Technician. A 2007 graduate of St. Lawrence University, Louise has built her knowledge of GIS and GPS through her studies as a biology major, her research and job experience. Examples include:
- “Conserving Biological Diversity in St. Lawrence County: The Role of Land Trusts,” an unsupervised classification of landuse using ERDAS Imagine
- “Quantifying relationships between impervious surface cover, disturbance and chick performance in Troglodytes aedon,” GIS digitizing and impervious surface analysis
- NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, assessing bald eagle populations in eastern NYS
- UCRB Army Corps of Engineers, bird point counts, owl surveys, bat mist netting and vegetation surveys to determine management regime of various land types
- Montana State University, bird point counts and vegetation surveys in Cascade Mountains on timber lands to asses current and recommend new management regimes
- River’s Edge Consulting, bird point counts for threatened and endangered grassland species
Louise is also St. Lawrence’s Sustainability Coordinator.
Recently purchasing 15 acres of land in South Canton, Louise and her partner have built an off-grid ‘tiny house’ and continue to expand the production of their 1,200 sq. ft. garden. An avid bicycle commuter, bird song identifier, scrounger, food preservationist and vegan cook, Louise is also learning the joys of fermentation, seed saving and a simpler life.
