SLU Digital Atlas slopes near the snowbowl

The Digital Atlas of the St. Lawrence Lowlands/Adirondack Highlands is a network-based GIS database produced by the SLU Libraries.

The Atlas contains ESRI-compatible GIS data covering the St. Lawrence Valley Lowlands and Adirondack Highlands. This is an ongoing project designed to bring together a variety of spatial data that are relevant to the needs of St. Lawrence University students and faculty. For ease of use, the projection, datum and file formats have been standardized.

Projection:  UTM Zone 18 North
Datum:  North American Datum 1983
Spheroid:  WGS 84
Distance Units:  Meters

File Format:  The vector data layers are in ESRI shapefile formats.  These files can be read directly into the Libraries' ESRI ArcView and ArcGIS software.  The raster data layers are in various formats including ARC/INFO Grid, Mr. Sid and TIFF compressions.  All of these formats can be read directly in the Libraries' GIS software.

All data is accessable on T:/Atlas.

Campus Data- This folder contains numerous data layers centered around the St. Lawrence campus, including contours, buildings, walkways, driveways and trails.

Ecological Zones- This data includes dominant vegetation, generalized geology, soil type and climatic regimes. The data is focused on the Adirondacks and St. Lawrence County, but coverage is available for northern and most of western NY.

Elevation- This folder contains Digital Elevation Models (DEM’s) of areas in St. Lawrence County and throughout the Adirondacks. They are produced by the U.S. Geological Survey and provide elevation data which can be used in a number of earth science applications.

Geology- Contains two folders, surficial and bedrock geology at the 1:250,000 scale. From the NYS Museum.

Historic Maps- Maps of St. Lawrence University in its early years, with property boundaries.

Hydrography- Hydrological data for the county including major rivers, smaller streams and lakes.

TIGER 2000- Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) systems files were developed by the Census Bureau in the 1990’s to simplify data collection and analysis. They include transportation data, hydrography, and census statistics.

Topography- This folder contains Digital Raster Graphics (DRG’s) of St. Lawrence County and the Adirondacks. A DRG is a scanned image of USGS standard series topographic maps.

Transportation- Contains coverage of St. Lawrence County roads and TIGER line data.

Watersheds- Contains watershed delineations of NYS and St. Lawrence County river basins.
