Welcome to the GIS Program at St. Lawrence University

The GIS Program at St. Lawrence University is one of many services offered by the University Libraries. Located on the top floor of the Launders Science Library, we provide instructional, technical and research support to the St. Lawrence University community in the use of geospatial software and technology.

The GIS Program Welcomes the New GIS/GPS Technician

The GIS Program at St. Lawrence welcomes Jon Ignatowski to our staff as the new GPS/GIS Technician.  A 2012 graduate of St. Lawrence University, Jon has built his knowledge of GIS and GPS through his studies as an Environmental Studies and English combined major.

Jon currently practices a semi-nomadic lifestyle in Canton, and enjoys activities such as gardening, food preservation, hunting, fishing, hiking, and bicycling. Jon is also a bicycle mechanic, tending to the needs of many local bicycle enthusiasts.

You can find Jon in his office, room 312 on the third floor of Launders Science Library. If you wish to contact him, his office phone extension is 5489, and his e-mail is jignatow@stlawu.edu.

New Online Source for GIS Data & Maps

AtoZ Maps Online from World Trade Press

GIS data is available at the state, country and global levels. Data formats are shapefiles, e00 files and mdb files. This is also the worlds largest subscription-based database of proprietary, royalty-free world, continent, country, and state maps. Included in the 4,000+ maps are: political, physical, outline, population, precipitation, climate, and other thematic maps. New maps are added to the collection every month. Maps are royalty-free and may be used by students, faculty, administrators, and library patrons, for: reports, posters, multi-media presentations, and just about any other use imaginable. So long as you do not resell the digital images or create products for resale from the images, you don't have to worry about usage rights.

News from the Elberty Laboratory:

Freshmen from Amanda Lavigne's and Kathleen Buckley's FYP, "The Power of Place," are using GPS technology to enhance their spatial understanding of campus and the Turtle Hill Community. The students are recording features that catch their eye and, as part of their final projects, projecting composites of their discoveries on maps.
