Jeff Chiarenzelli has been appointed as the Geological Society of America representative to the American Geological Institute’s Environmental Geoscience Advisory Committee.

The Environmental Geoscience Advisory Committee (EGAC) was established to help identify and focus on the highest priority environmental informational needs and issues best addressed by the geoscience community.  The charge of the committee includes:

- Increase public awareness and understanding of environmental issues and the controls of earth
  systems on these issues

- Communicate societal needs for managing resources, protection from Earth hazards, and for
  evaluation of risks associated with human activities related to earth processes and resources

- Promote appropriate science in public policy through improved communication within and
  without the geoscience community related to environmental policy issues and proposed

- Increase dissemination of information related to environmental programs, projects, research,
  and professional activities in the geoscience community
