How to Register for FYS

FYS REGISTRATION:

FYS courses like all other courses will appear in APR 2.0 on Tuesday, October 18th. Students who complete the form by Friday, October 28 to be registered into the FYS taught by their advisor or the co-instructor will see their registration appear in APR 2.0 on Tuesday morning, November 15. FYS registration closes on Thursday, November 10th at 11:59 p.m. - students cannot make changes to their FYS on APR, but they are able to make other course changes until APR closes on Friday, December 16. See more information under "Important Rules To Know" below.

If you have any problems with registration, please contact the Registrar’s office.

While the normal advising period for the Spring semester opens on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 and continues through Friday, November 4, 2016, we are making available earlier the titles, full course descriptions, faculty members, and class days and times of FYS courses so first year students who wish to remain with either their FYP advisor or co-instructor may notify us. If you choose this option, see “Staying with Current FYP Advisor or Co-Instructor for your FYS” below.

Registering for FYS Courses That Count As A Department Course

When reviewing the FYS course descriptions, please be aware of any courses that count as a department course.  If your FYS is equivalent to/counts as a SLU course, you cannot register for that FYS if you already have the equivalent course on your student record, either as residential or transfer credit. Some examples for this spring semester are: FRPG-2093, counts as GNDR 103; FRPG-2052, counts as STAT 113; and FRPG-2014, counts as ENG 190. If your FYS has counts as a course, it will be noted in the APR 2.0 course description. Please review the description for details.

Registering for an FYS with a New Instructor

Registration opens for EVERYONE at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, November 7 until 11:59 p.m., and all students may choose one course. On Tuesday, November 8, starting at 7:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., all students may choose a 2nd course. There is no registration on Wednesday, November 9. On Thursday, November 10, students may choose their 3rd and 4th courses. Registration remains open until the end of final exam week - it will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016. You may select an FYS during any one of the three registration windows, but recognize if you wait until the final window on November 10, your choices will be limited. FYS registration closes on Thursday, November 10 at 11:59 p.m. - students cannot make changes to their FYS on APR, but they are able to make other changes until APR closes on Friday, December 16. Please contact the FYP office to make changes to your FYS. See more info regarding changing your FYS below in Important Rules to Know.

Before registration opens, read through the Spring FYS Offerings. Clicking on each title will take you to the full course description, faculty member(s), and days and class times. After reading through the course descriptions, add to your Course Plan in APR2 any FYS sections that you are interested in (given that each FYS section has a maximum of 10-17 students, be sure to have more than one choice).

Staying with Current FYP Advisor or Co-Instructor for your FYS

To register for a Spring FYS, you need to first decide if you wish to remain with either your current FYP advisor or co-instructor who will be teaching an FYS (not all FYP instructors teach FYS courses - see list below for those teaching an FYS). If you wish to remain with either of these faculty members and take the FYS course they are teaching, you will need to complete and submit this form no later than 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 28.  You will be pre-registered into the FYS taught by either your advisor, or the co-instructor, for your FYS and it will appear in APR2 on Tuesday, November 15

IMPORTANT RULES TO KNOW:

  • After November 10 any and all changes to FYS placements/registrations must go through the FYP Office. FYS faculty cannot add you to a waiting list, nor sign an add/drop form for their course. Please email us at FYP with your request to change and we will provide you with your next step in the process.
  • If you pre-register for an FYS and then decide to add another FYS to your schedule, the registrar will automatically drop you from the second FYS and keep you in the seminar for which you requested to be pre-registered. Please email the FYP office with your request to change.
  • Withdrawal from an FYS course is not permitted, nor may FYS courses be taken on a Pass/Fail basis. FYS courses may count for department, program, ILC, or distribution/diversity credit.
  • No FYS course changes will be accepted after Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 3:30 p.m.
  • Add/drop ends on Thursday, January 26, 2017.
  • Your FYP advisor will not change until you complete a request to change advisors during your sophomore year.
