Queer Performances On and Off the Stage

Fall 2018

Traveling both to the stage and by the page, this course will examine how queerness is enacted. We begin by defining ‘queerness’ as anything against the grain of normal. In the service of raising fundamental questions concerning how queerness is performed and embodied, we will critically interpret queer performances in novels, plays, and critical essays. In a culminating project, students will analyze a contemporary music video and write and perform a monologue that speaks to any aspect of queerness.
