The renewal process to apply for financial aid is on-line this year, as we work to simplify the process for you and your parents and to reduce the University’s use of paper.
This note contains instructions for completing the 2009-2010 SLU financial aid application process. Hard-copy renewal aid packets will not be mailed to home addresses this year, but postcard reminders have been mailed to home addresses to alert parents and guardians to this renewal process. (If someone else helps you complete your financial aid renewal application, please forward these instructions to that individual.)
As a reminder, the deadline for receipt of ALL financial aid application materials is Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Late financial aid applicants risk losing eligibility for part or all of their financial aid resources. Should you feel that you have special circumstances that will not allow you to meet the April 15, 2009 financial aid application deadline, you must request an extension by April 1, 2009. Because not all requests for extensions will be approved, we encourage you to request an extension as soon as you are aware of your special circumstances. Extension requests may be made at www.finaid@stlawu.edu or by calling 800-355-0863.
We look forward to assisting you in the application process. Please do not hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office with any questions you may have.
Financial Aid Application Renewal Steps:
- COMPLETE THE 2009-2010 RENEWAL - FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA). The Federal school code for St. Lawrence University is 002829. (File your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov). Only file ONE FAFSA!
*It is important to submit accurate and complete parent and student financial information.
*After the FAFSA has been processed, you will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). If you supplied an email address on your FAFSA, your SAR will be sent to that email address. If you did not supply an email address, your SAR will be mailed to your home address as listed on your FAFSA. Upon receipt, promptly check the data for accuracy.
*File your completed FAFSA application between January 1, 2009 and April 15, 2009.
Do not file until 2008 income tax forms have been completed, but no later than April 15, 2009. If your 2008 income tax forms will not be completed by April 15, 2009 and you have a documented extension from the IRS, you have until June 1, 2009 to complete the required forms. You must contact the SLU Financial Aid Office no later than April 1 to receive an approved extension.
NEW YORK RESIDENTS-- IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Families must continue to be residents of New York State for consideration of the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). The TAP application process begins by filing the FAFSA and listing a college or university located in New York State. Final award notices will be sent to students as soon as New York State passes the 2009 budget. Students should complete their TAP Application on line at www.tapweb.org.
VERMONT RESIDENTS:
Do not forget to submit your on-time application to VSAC (Vermont Student Assistance Corp.) for consideration of a State grant. It’s your responsibility to contact VSAC to be certain you comply with the VSAC application deadline.
- COMPLETE THE ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION SUPPLEMENT.
You will need to print, complete and return the supplement to the SLU Financial Aid Office. (Unfortunately, this form is not yet formatted for electronic submission. We will continue to work to move toward a completely paperless process.)
SLU Financial Aid Application Supplement
- SUBMIT TAX COPIES.
Provide signed and dated copies (including all schedules) of parent and student 2008 federal income tax forms along with one copy of each 2008 W-2 form to the St. Lawrence University Financial Aid Office by April 15, 2009. These forms can be mailed or faxed.
- VERIFICATION.
If you have listed any 2008 untaxed income resources on either the FAFSA or the Supplement, please forward copies of documentation to support these amounts. Examples of untaxed income include Social Security benefits, public assistance benefits (e.g., AFDC), worker’s compensation and disability. A delay in receiving this documentation or proof of the untaxed income will result in a late award notification.
Please be aware that if you indicate on your FAFSA that more than one family member is attending college at least half-time during 2009-2010, we will require proof of enrollment. We will send a “Sibling Verification Form” to you in late summer/early fall to verify this item on your FAFSA. In the event that the number enrolled in college (at least half-time) decreases, your financial aid award will be adjusted down as your federally-calculated financial need will decrease. Please note that the Federal government does not allow parents to be included in the number of family members attending college for the purpose of calculating financial need.
- NON-CUSTODIAL PARENT INFORMATION.
Please be aware that if your FAFSA results indicate that your parents are separated or divorced, we may require the submission of financial information from your non-custodial parent. We may also request a copy of the separation or divorce agreement. You will be contacted if this information is required.
REMEMBER:
Late applicants run the risk of not being considered for St. Lawrence aid or receiving a reduction in grant assistance.
Your family’s eligibility to receive need-based financial aid, and the amount of aid for which you are eligible, is determined by the results of your on-time annual financial aid application.
If you have brothers or sisters who are also attending college in the 2009-2010 academic year, please remind them to complete the financial aid forms for their school.
If you feel that you have any unusual circumstances not included in the FAFSA, please forward a separate letter directly to the SLU Financial Aid Office.
Fall 2009 semester bills will be available on-line early July 2009. Paper bills will also be mailed to students at their home address. The balance on your account (cost minus applicable aid) for the fall semester is due August 15, 2009. Spring 2010 billing statements are expected to be mailed in December 2009, and payment is due January 15, 2010. Additional billing information including details about the time payment plan may be found at http://stlawu.edu/sfs/index.html.
