Wachtmeister Field Station Open House — Little River Nature Area
Come to the Wachtmeister Field Station, St. Lawrence's first "green building," and get your hands dirty doing envrionmental science. We'll have creepy-crawlies and a host of cool toys (e.g. radio telemetry equipment, GPS devices) to play with, as well as displays and demonstrations of local geology, wildlife, plants, insects, microbiology, watershed chemistry and more, hosted by students and faculty. Learn techniques for animal trapping and tracking, hear about local environmental research, practice sampling techniques, and use GPS skills to locate unique environments and organisms in a geocaching event. You can also walk the trails at the Little River Nature Area and just enjoy our beautiful surroundings. Selected events: 9:00 a.m., Bird Walk; 10:30 a.m., Plant Walk; Noon, Barbecue; 1:00-2:00 p.m., Poster session of Integrated Science Education Initiative (ISEI) summer research fellows; 2:00-3:00 p.m., Geocaching with prizes. Intended to introduce what should be done in preparation, this session is useful for students and parents who are in the preliminary stages of considering off-campus study. We will address academic concerns about health and safety, academic credit, cost of participation, and the application process itself. If students (or parents) want detailed information about a particular program, please attend the 11:30 a.m. session. |

This is geared toward students who may have applied for a program, or already know which program they are interested in.
