NEW FACULTY, ACADEMIC SUPPORT STAFF, and ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF BIOGRAPHIES – FALL 2010


These biographies are of the faculty, academic support staff and administrators who joined St. Lawrence between August 2009 and August 2010.

ADIRONDACK SEMESTER

David Durant: A graduate of Montreal's McGill University, where he received an Honors degree in Modern European Intellectual History, Dave has been exploring the Adirondack mountains on foot and by canoe since he was nine years old. He is an enthusiastic climber and mountaineer. Academically, his interests run the gamut from Philosophy to Politics and Economics. A former Ambulance Squad member, he enjoys teaching Wilderness First Aid. In the Adirondacks, he has worked as a Summer Camp Administrator, Director of an Outdoor Education Center, and a carpenter. In addition to his work for the Adirondack Semester, he is currently a professional ski instructor and National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Instructor. He is Adirondack 46-er.

ADMISSIONS

Sarah Maneely joins the staff as an Assistant Director after three years working in the admissions office at Union College.  Sarah has prior experience at St. Lawrence, having completed an internship in the Center for International and Intercultural Studies during her senior year at SUNY Potsdam.  There she earned a B.A. in English Literature and Anthropology and spent a semester studying in Norway.  Sarah will be coordinating admissions events and managing the student ambassador program.

ALUMNI AND PARENT PROGRAMS

John Pezdek'03 joined the APP office in September 2009. As the Assistant Director for Reunion Giving, he is responsible for coordinating fundraising efforts for all reunion classes with the exception of the 25th and 50th reunion years. John earned his BA , majoring in economics. During his time at St. Lawrence he was a 4 year member of the golf team, a member of the Student Judicial Board and was a Thelomathesian Senator.  In 2005 he returned to St. Lawrence as the Assistant Golf Coach and in 2007 earned his M.Ed in Education Administration. Since 2007 he has continued his role as Assistant Golf Coach, while also teaching in the First-Year Program.

ART AND ART HISTORY

Peter Nelson comes to St. Lawrence as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography and Digital Media in Fine Arts. Peter earned his M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts from the University of Washington in 2010. Through photography, video, and performance, Peter's art explores themes of relationships, gender, and identity. He will teach classes in traditional and digital photography, video and new media.

BIOLOGY

Karin Heckman begins her position as an Assistant Professor of Biology this fall, after spending the past three years at SLU as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology.  Kari earned her PhD in Biomedical Sciences: Immunology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and her BS in Community-Medical Dietetics at Viterbo University in Wisconsin.  She combines these interests in immunology and nutrition in her research projects that focus on the potential preventative and therapeutic effects of naturally occurring substances on melanoma and multiple sclerosis.  Kari will teach courses in General Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, Human Nutrition, and Cancer Biology.

Jaclyn teRiele comes to St. Lawrence as Laboratory Manager for the Biology Department.  Jackie earned her MS in Pharmacology at the University of Vermont and is a St. Lawrence University alumnus.   

CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL AND INTERCULTURAL STUDIES

Ratanaporn Sethakul is an Associate Professor of History, Thai and Southeast Asian Studies at Payap University, Chiang Mai, Thailand, who joins us as a visiting professor for the fall semester.  She earned her Ph.D. in Asian history from Northern Illinois University in 1989. Her research field is the social and cultural history of mainland Southeast Asia and southwestern part of China. She comes to SLU as a visiting fellow with support from the Freeman Foundation to teach two classes: The History of Thailand & Her Neighbors and the Contemporary History of Thailand.

ECONOMICS

Petrik Runst comes to St Lawrence University as a visiting instructor in the Economics Department. He received his M.Sc. in Economics from the University of Nottingham in England and he will receive his Ph.D. from George Mason University in the spring of 2011. Petrik’s research focuses on Institutional economics, entrepreneurship, and is interdisciplinary in nature. He will be teaching quantitative methods as well as a class on entrepreneurship this fall.

M. Garrett Roth comes to St. Lawrence as Visiting Assistant Professor in Economics, having earned his PhD from Binghamton University in the summer of this year.  His research is in the economics of political campaigning.  Garrett will be teaching Introductory Economics as well as a course on Voting Rules and Social Choice.

ENGLISH

Sarah Barber
comes to St. Lawrence as Visiting Assistant Professor in Poetry from the University of Missouri, where she earned her Ph.D. in English and Creative Writing in 2009.  Her research is in adaptations of Shakespeare. Sarah will be teaching classes in creative writing and British literature.

Peter Selgin comes to St. Lawrence as Viebranz Visiting Professor of Creative Writing. He is the author of Drowning Lessons, winner of the 2007 Flannery O'Connor Award for Fiction, and Life Goes to the Movies, a novel, as well as two books on writing craft. “Confessions of a Left-Handed Man,” a collection of essays whose title essay was included in Best American Essays 2006, has just been accepted for publication by University of Iowa Press. He will be teaching classes in fiction writing and on “unclassifiable” literature.

FINANCIAL AID

Tommiann Olmstead joined the St. Lawrence community in December 2009 as Assistant Director of Financial Aid.  She gained experience working in the Financial Aid and Student Administrative Services offices at Clarkson while she was an undergraduate, earning her B.S. in biology.  Among her responsibilities, Tommiann coordinates student employment.

GEOLOGY

David Kratzmann comes to St. Lawrence University as a full-time visiting faculty member in the Geology Department. David received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island in 2009. His research interests center around the study of explosive volcanism associated with subduction zones. David will be teaching classes on petrology, structural, and environmental geology.

Alexander K. Stewart comes to St. Lawrence University as an Assistant Professor in Geology from another combat deployment to Afghanistan.  Dr. Stewart earned his PhD in Glacial Geology in 2007 from the University of Cincinnati.  His research focuses on glacier interactions with the landscape.  Dr. Stewart will be teaching Glacial Geology, Hydrogeology and Introductory Geology.

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Scott Brisson joined the football staff in summer 2010, and serves the program as both the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. A 2006 graduate of Bowdoin College, Brisson came to St. Lawrence following a two-year assistant coaching stint at Lehigh University. While coaching at Lehigh, he served as both the wide receivers and running backs coach. Brisson also worked for two seasons as the wide receivers coach at Franklin and Marshall after completing a stand-out playing career as a wide out at Bowdoin. He will also work as the baseball team's operations manager beginning spring 2011.

Peter Hoy, a former professional baseball player and the pitching coach for several years for Division I LeMoyne College in Syracuse, is our new head baseball coach. A member of the Canadian Olympic baseball team for the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Hoy was a relief pitcher in the Boston Red Sox organization from 1989-93 and pitched for the Red Sox in 1992. He attended LeMoyne from 1986-88 and was drafted by the Red Sox in 1988. Following his professional career, he completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Mississippi, in 1998. Hoy was the pitching coach for LeMoyne from 1997-2009 and was co-director of the college's baseball camp. He helped LeMoyne to a 361-221 record and NCAA regional appearances in 2003, 2004 and 2007. Hoy's pitching staff led the conference in team ERAs five times and produced 10 professional pitchers, two All America and four conference pitchers-of-the-year. Hoy was a member of the coaching staff under head coach Steve Owens, a former St. Lawrence baseball standout.

Kristine Johnson joined theAthletic Training staff in the fall of 2010.  She previously worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, IA for two years.
Johnson graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training in 2008 from Messiah College.  She was a Dean’s list student as well.  She is CPR, AED, First Aid and Oxygen Administration certified and will be graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in the summer of 2010 with her M.S. in Advanced Athletic Training. Kristine served as an athletic trainer at several events, including the USA Wrestling Tournaments in 2009 and 2010 and the Future Stars Lacrosse Camp.  She also worked for the Special Olympics First Aid crew in 2005 and 2008.

Mark Raymond M' 95, the former defensive coordinator at Ithaca College, was named the 22nd head coach of the football program in the spring of 2010. Raymond, who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Buffalo in 1993, worked for three years at St. Lawrence as a graduate assistant coach with the football team. In his prior tenure in Canton, NY, Raymond coached linebackers, defensive ends and wide receivers while building a solid recruiting foundation throughout the northeast as Recruiting Coordinator for St. Lawrence. During his seven-year stint as the defensive coordinator at Ithaca College, the Bombers went 59-19 (.756) and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments. Raymond comes to St. Lawrence after working with the U.S. Government since May of 2007. He also has coaching roots at Syracuse University, where he was a graduate assistant for two years. His resume also includes impressive teaching experience at Ithaca College, while attending premier football camps throughout New York State. Raymond was a three-year varsity letterman for the University of Buffalo's football squad from 1990-1992.

Shelly Roiger, head volleyball coach, has a B.A. in Math from the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota along with a Master of Science degree in Education from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota.
Shelly Roiger took over the Northland College, Wisconsin program in 2005 having previously served as an assistant at Carleton College and St. Olaf College, both located in Northfield, MN. Inheriting a program that had only three wins in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, she led Northland to its first ever UMAC Tournament Championship in 2007.  Roiger was a volunteer assistant to the Saints' volleyball program in 2010.

MODERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

Isaac Joslin comes to St. Lawrence University as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Francophone and African Studies. Isaac earned his doctorate in French from the University of Minnesota in 2010. His research is in literature and cinema of French-speaking Africa. Isaac will be teaching classes on Francophone Africa through novels and films.

Peter Mwangi comes to St. Lawrence from Kenya as a Swahili Teaching Fellow in the department of Modern Languages and Literature.  He is currently pursuing his PhD in Linguistics at Moi University, in Eldoret, Kenya. His research is in the field of Onomastics i.e. the study of names.  While in Kenya Mwangi was most recently an Assistant Lecturer at Daystar University in Nairobi.  He is looking forward to teaching Swahili at St. Lawrence. 

Marc Olivier Reid comes to St. Lawrence as Visiting Assistant Professor in Spanish from an Adjunct Instructor position in Modern Languages and Literatures here at St. Lawrence.  Marc earned his Ph.D. in Spanish & Portuguese from Yale University in May 2010.  His areas of research include eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Spanish and Latin American literature and cultural history, Latin American cinema, and comparative literature of the Americas. This Fall, Marc will be teaching classes on Spanish literature and Spanish American Film.

Karim Simpore comes to St. Lawrence as a Visiting Assistant Professor in French. Karim earned his Ph.D. in Francophone Studies from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2009. His research is in The Myths and the Role of Women in the Quest of African, Cajun, and Caribbean Identity. Karim will be teaching classes on French and Francophone studies.

MUNN WRITING CENTER

Elizabeth Becht came to St. Lawrence University in 2008 as an Adjunct Instructor for the First Year Program and the English Department. This year she will be the Interim Director of the WORD Studio and Visiting Instructor of Rhetoric & Communication. Elizabeth earned her Master’s degree in Education from SUNY Potsdam in 2006.

PHYSICS

Eunice Cheung
joins us as a visiting assistant professor in physics this year, after serving as an adjunct instructor for the University last year.  She received a B.A. from Swarthmore College, and an M.S. and a PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard University, where she studied the neurobiology of auditory hair cells.  Prior to teaching at St. Lawrence, Dr. Cheung was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University investigating Microendoscopy of the Inner Ear.  

PSYCHOLOGY

Amber Eade comes to St. Lawrence as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Psychology from a postdoctoral research position at SRC Inc. in Syracuse, NY.  Amber earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from SUNY Upstate Medical University in January 2010.  Her research focuses on changes in the olfactory response to ethanol odor as a consequence of exposure during fetal and adolescent development.  Amber will be teaching classes in introductory and developmental psychology.

Jessica Swanner comes to St. Lawrence as Assistant Professor in Psychology.  Jessica earned her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Arkansas in 2010.  Her research is in social psychological issues in wrongful convictions.  Jessica will be teaching classes on Introductory Psychology and Social Psychology.

QUANTITATIVE RESOURCE CENTER

Allison Morrow'10 comes to St. Lawrence as the Assistant Director of the Quantitative Resource Center (QRC) and Admissions interviewer while pursuing a master’s of education in general studies.  Allison graduated from St. Lawrence in May with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics.

STUDENT LIFE

Stacey Banfield-Hardaway'08 – Stacey joins our Residence Life staff as a Residential Coordinator.  She received a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration (HESA) in May 2010 from the University of Vermont.   While at UVM, she was the Coordinator for Assessment, Marketing and Publications in the Department of Residential Life.  She was a Community Assistant for three of her four years at St. Lawrence. 

Tsewang Lama'10 – Tsewang joins the Student Life staff as Coordinator, International Student Services.  She came to St. Lawrence as a United World College Davis Scholar.  As a student Tsewang served as a coordinator in our International House, Managing Editor of Laurentian Magazine, Co-President of Literacy for Nepal, President of Asian Students Intercultural Association (ASIA), and Vice President of Rotaract Club of St. Lawrence University. 

Alison Riccobono – Alison joined the Student Life staff as a full-time Residential Coordinator in our Residence Life Office in mid-August.  She has a Master of Education from St. Lawrence and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University.  Since August 2008, Alison has served as
St. Lawrence’s Head Diving Coach and Assistant Director of Intramurals.
