Associate Professor of Chemistry Nadia Marano was looking
for the ideal formula for teaching and learning when she came to
St. Lawrence. "A small liberal arts college is just the sort
of place I was looking for," she says, remembering why she wanted
to work here when arriving in 1992. She now teaches general chemistry
and biochemistry courses, and can point to a long list of collaborative
research projects with students, proving her sense when she interviewed
that "students were interested in my work and that St.
Lawrence is very supportive of the work faculty want to do in their
teaching and research."
The small class sizes and close faculty-student interaction are
what Marano says she enjoys most. "I like the fact that although
students want to do well, they cooperate and want each other to succeed
as well, rather than engaging in the competition that I have seen
at some universities,"” she says. "People
at St. Lawrence are always willing to help each other."
Marano earned her bachelor's degree in biochemistry at Manhattan College,
and her master's degree (biochemistry) and the Ph.D. (molecular biology)
from Princeton University.
