Juraj Kittler has been a journalist, and now he is a teacher of his craft. Kittler is an assistant professor in both the
performance and communication arts department and
English departments. A native of Slovakia, he earned his Ph.D. in mass communication from Pennsylvania State University. Kittler teaches journalism and communication classes and is the advisor for the student newspaper,
The Hill News.
He has been a reporter, editor and broadcaster for Slovak Public Radio and Radio VATICAN; a foreign correspondent based in Rome as well as a reporter, op-ed writer and chief editor of the international news desk for the Slovak national daily newspaper SME and weekly magazine
Moment; and a freelance journalist with bylines in print media such as the
Christian Science Monitor and the Slovak newspaper
Pravda, and electronic media such as Slovak Public TV.
"The size of the University, its reputation and its location attracted me," Kittler says. "
My research interest crosses boundaries of multiple disciplines, and a good liberal arts college is a natural fit. My Slovak home town, Bratislava, is on the Danube and borders two different countries and cultures, Austria and Hungary, with their respective capitals Vienna and Budapest just around the corner. I see a parallel here with the St. Lawrence River, Ontario and Quebec, Ottawa and Montreal, and I hope that I will have some opportunities to use this
geographic advantage not only for my own enjoyment but also as a teaching opportunity."
