Direction of a play that premiered at St. Lawrence is among the
great experiences Associate Professor of Speech and Theatre Rebecca
Daniels has had as a faculty member here.
Associate Professor of Speech and Theatre Rebecca Daniels joined
the faculty in 1992, having earned her bachelor's degree at Stanford
University, her M.F.A. at the University of Portland and the Ph.D.
at the University of Oregon. She has directed several major theatre
productions, as well as teaching courses in the department and the First-Year
Program.
In addition, Daniels was the project coordinator for renovations
to the arts facilities in the Noble Center and
has served on a number of committees including the Professional Standards
Committee and the Hewlett Pluralism and Unity Project, a multiyear
initiative to promote diversity on campus. While on sabbatical in 1998-1999,
she wrote a full-length play based on the life of American composer
Amy Beach. The
Famous Mrs. Beach premiered at
St. Lawrence in 2002, directed by Daniels. "It was extraordinary
to produce a totally original script into a full production,” she
says. She is also active as a theatre scholar, and wrote the book Women
Stage Directors Speak: Exploring the Effects of Gender on Their Work.
