When
asked what she enjoys most about her work, Associate Professor of Mathematics Maegan
Bos enthusiastically responds, “Teaching! I love mathematics,
and it is so cool to teach kids about it. It really fires me up.”
A
Charlotte, NC, native, Bos came to St. Lawrence in 1994.
She appreciates the freedom she’s given in the classroom. “In
most of my courses, there are fixed topics you have to cover, but there
is always some wiggle room to teach other topics,” she says. “This
is especially true in Math 110—in this class we can teach
any mathematical topic we select. I’ve been able to do some graph
theory, some Web pages, even some ethnomathematics.” Bos received
her B.S. in mathematics from Davidson College and her Ph.D. in mathematics
from North Carolina State. Her area of expertise is in Lie Algebras,
but she has recently been focusing on number theory and Knot theory.
But mathematics is not her only love. While an undergraduate, she took
many theatre credits and was certified to teach high school drama. She
even belonged to the Society for Creative Anachronism (a medieval recreation
society), "but I haven’t had time to keep up with that," she
admits. As for her other hobbies, she says, "I love to read. I enjoy
singing and playing my guitar. But most of the time I’m trying
to keep up with Nicholas, my 3-year-old." |
