Skilled Trades
The skilled trades work group consists of a facilities manager and employees who are responsible for providing the necessary maintenance on University facilities. This work group is also heavily involved with construction projects, renovations, and remodeling.
Carpentry:
The carpenters are responsible for general repairs and construction associated with all structures throughout the University. Some examples of their areas of expertise are as follows: office remodeling, cabinetry, doors, windows, and roof repairs. This work group is involved with all facets of general contracting work.Electricians:
The electricians on campus are responsible for all facets of the University’s electrical infrastructure. Their duties involve the installation, maintenance, and repairs to residential, commercial, and industrial wiring and devices.In addition, they play an integral role with fire safety throughout our campus. They maintain and enhance the fire detection devices at the University. Some examples of these devices are fire alarms, smoke detectors, heat sensors, pull stations, along with emergency and exit lighting.
Locksmith:
The locksmith shop is responsible for carrying out the campus wide key control policy. The key control policy has been setup for the security of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus.The locksmith shop is charged with the task of managing the following items: making new keys, return of existing keys, re-keying of various areas, etc. The locksmith shop also manages the database associated with the key control policy. This database tracks employees who have been issued keys along with the specific building(s) and/or department(s).
Painting:
Painters are responsible for maintaining the painting throughout the entire campus. The campus is periodically evaluated and a determination is made as to which areas will be scheduled for painting. The painters are responsible for all exterior and interior painting throughout the University. If you notice any problem areas, please submit your request through the department's work order system.Plumbers:
The plumbers are responsible for all facets of the University’s water supply. Their activities include the installation, repair, and maintenance of the piping, fittings, and fixtures which are associated with the distribution and usage of water throughout the University's facilities. Some examples of their day-to-day activities include the following: maintenance and new installation of piping, showers, tubs, toilets, and sinks, etc.University signage:
The skilled trades work group is responsible for all signage on campus. All requests for signage are subject to the approval of the facilities operations department.
Skilled trades employees create interior building signage utilizing the latest in computer software and materials. The department uses an engraving machine for interior building signs throughout the campus. A vinyl plotter is also utilized to meet the demands for exterior signs and related projects.
Wood refinishing:
Skilled trades work group are also responsible for maintaining the appearance of wood structures at the University. Some examples of these areas of responsibilities include: refinishing of furniture, doors, closets, and general building woodwork.Outside contractor services are also used for larger construction projects, renovations, and remodeling. New construction, renovation, and remodeling projects are submitted with the annual budget report in October-November for consideration and approval is through the normal budget process.
