Workshop with Carmen Vázquez: Addressing LGBTQ Issues at St. Lawrence

Carmen Vázquez currently works as the coordinator for the LGBT Health and Human Services Unit at the New York State Department of Health’s AIDS Institute. She was the founding director of the Women’s Building in San Francisco, director of the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and coordinator of Lesbian and Gay Health Services for the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Vázquez returned to New York in 1994 as the director of public policy for the LGBT Community Center, where she worked until 2003. At the Center, she was the primary author of “Causes in Common” and founded the LGBT Health and Human Services Network. In 2005, she received an honorary law degree from the City University of New York. She continued her activist work as deputy director of the Empire State Pride Agenda from 2003 to 2007 and in her current position at the state Department of Health. In addition, her papers are part of the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College, and her history is included in the Voices of Feminism Oral History Project. She also serves on the advisor boards of several activist organizations, including the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance.

Vázquez will take part in the workshop “Equality vs. Justice: Addressing LGBTQ Issues on the St. Lawrence University Campus,” which will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 at St. Lawrence’s Global Dialogue Center, located at 84 Park St., Canton.
