EMT-B Training
SLU EMS operates at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level
under the approval of the New York State Department of Health's
Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and may perform a range
of Emergency Medical interventions outlined under New York
State DOH and St. Lawrence County BLS protocols. The EMT-Basic
certification allows an EMT to perform BLS interventions
and assist in advanced life support (ALS) techniques. EMT-Bs
are also certified to administer certain drugs such as Epinephrine
for severe allergic reactions, Aspirin for chest pain, Albuterol
for asthma, and Activated Charcoal for poisons. Basic EMTs
are one of the most important levels of certification in
the pre-hospital setting because Basics specialize in patient
stabilization prior to the arrival of advanced care.
SLU EMS sponsors students every year so that they may attend
SUNY Canton's EMT training program. We sponsor both our
own members and students who are not members of our organization.
Please note that we now routinely have more EMTs apply then
we have membership positions, so sponsorship through SLU
EMS does not guarantee membership with SLU EMS once students
have completed their course.
Once an EMT has completed his or her training, they then
continue their training by attending extra classes called
Continuing Medical Education (CME) classes. SLU EMS also
offers further continuing education and constantly reviews
the skills of our EMTs to ensure that the EMTs treating
you are of the highest possible quality.
