My St. Lawrence Experience: I had the opportunity to return to St. Lawrence University as the Graduate Assistant Rowing Coach in the fall of 2013. It had been over a year since I had attended a class or written a paper and balancing a full-time job along with graduate classes made me nothing if not nervous. Luckily, I was not alone in that most folks taking graduate classes were in similar situations. The faculty and staff were accommodating and supportive, and the small, mostly discussion based classes, were perfect for someone pursuing their master’s degree in Educational Leadership. I used the lessons I learned daily during my time as a coach, and I find myself falling back on those lessons frequently in my current position. Learning and exploring different leadership and communication styles, along with the history and various philosophies of education greatly influenced my decision to pursue a career in higher education.
