Dzifa Yador ’11 quickly acclimated to the change of scenery from her home in the Bronx, NY, to St. Lawrence University by immediately diving into as many activities and academic experiences that she could. “As a Laurentian, I believe that it’s my job to get the most out of my four years at St. Lawrence, and I hope to continue to be involved, even after my four years are up,” says Dzifa.
After a friend introduced the DeWitt Clinton High School graduate to the Black Student Union, she immediately made it her home away from home, serving as president in 2009-2010. “This was my opportunity to give back to the organization that gave so much to me when I needed it the most. I wanted to be able to be that mentor and helping hand for someone else as well, and hopefully inspire someone to do great things during their St. Lawrence career,” says Dzifa.
During her freshman year, she was a member of SLU Rotaract, a volunteer service club, and served as the First-Year Council president. She’s also kept busy working at the Brush Alumni House and the alumni and parent programs office, serving as a Community Assistant (CA), and as a senator in student government. She has also formed SLU’s only step team on campus.
Aside from her extracurricular involvement, Dzifa has built lasting relationships with all of her professors. “The fact that I can go to fine arts professor and artist Obiora Udechukwu ’s house for dinner, visit Fisk University with Dr. Margaret Kent Bass of English and listen to Professor Traci Fordham-Hernandez of performance and communication arts (my major) rock out with her band is a privilege that I’ve been honored to have,” says Dzifa.
This summer, Dzifa is an intern for MTV Networks in their production management department. She also plans to go to graduate school for communication studies.
