In 2004, Lora Wu '07 took part in St. Lawrence’s Adirondack
Semester.
She and 10 other students lived in a yurt village in the mountains. They
took classes, studied, cooked, and lived in the woods while enjoying weekend
excursions into different parts of the Adirondacks. The students were there
until Thanksgiving Break, then embarked upon a 10-day comparative study trip
to the U.S. Southwest.
A psychology and sociology double
major with a minor in outdoor
studies, the Litchfield, Conn., native is also a community
mentor with the Center
for Civic Engagement and Leadership and participates in Habitat for Humanity and
Rotaract.
“I’ve
always been interested in community service,” she
says. “At St. Lawrence, I’ve been able to expand
upon this and turn more towards civic engagement.”
Over the
summer, Lora received a Career Services internship fellowship to
take part in an internship at a women’s center in Peru for
a month. “The
center empowers women,” Wu explains. “It’s a safe
place for them--it boosts their self esteem, educates them about
relationship abuse and helps them to gain economic independence.”
Her experience there made her realize a lot about herself. “I
really liked getting another perspective,” Lora says. “I
hope that whatever I do in the future, I will be able to continue working
with people from other cultures.”
