As a new assistant professor in the education department, Ying “Wannie” Wang says she is most impressed by “the good and sincere work my students turn in.” Originally from Taiwan and more recently Los Angeles, she was a Jeffrey Campbell Fellow at St. Lawrence last year, teaching one education course while finishing her Ed.D. from Alliant International University, San Francisco.
She completed her doctoral studies in spring 2006, focusing on international education and culturally responsive teaching; her dissertation explored challenges faced by foreign-status and new immigrant Asian students who migrate to the U.S. for a high school education unaccompanied by their parents or family.
Very few researchers have investigated issues surrounding this specific population.
Dr. Wang teaches both undergraduate and graduate education courses.
“Teaching at the graduate level is very challenging,” she says. “It is also very rewarding. I appreciate the intellectual exchange among the students and myself.” She also lauds “The professional and social support I receive from my colleagues.”
Before coming to St. Lawrence, she taught in a private high school and was a bilingual (English/Mandarin Chinese) teacher in various after-school programs. She holds a B.A. in Chinese literature and has received graduate-level training in interpersonal communication. She practices yoga, enjoys music and movies, and loves dogs.
