Somdeep Sen '07, a government major from Calcutta, India, and a graduate of La Martiniere for Boys, has already studied all aound the world. His travels began in 2004 when he attended summer school at Ajou University in Korea. A year later, he studied for a semester at the University of Helsinki, Finland. As part of the International Student Exchange Program, he says he chose Finland because he is "really interested in human rights, and Finland is well known for its human rights initiative and global aid programs."
With hopes of becoming "a renowned journalist and researcher specializing in South and Central Asia and the Middle East," Somdeep is already gaining the experience he needs through his diverse travels and his experiences in the St. Lawrence community. He has researched in Mexico, New Mexico, Texas and Arizona through a St. Lawrence global studies course, and worked in the Czech Republic through career services. He spent last summer in India on a Travel Research Grant funded by St. Lawrence, and intends to graduate with honors with "a senior thesis on a comparative study of Turkmenistan and North Korea." He says, "I would really like to travel to Turkmenistan for the research."
"The best part of my academic life at SLU has been the way they have provided and encouraged opportunities for me to broaden my learning," Somdeep says. On campus, Somdeep also participates in Model UN, South Asia Bollywood and Holiday Association (SABHA), the political science honorary Pi Sigma Alpha, and the Association for Campus Entertainment (ACE), which he serves as president.
