If you’re in Latvia and see someone wearing a St. Lawrence sweatshirt, chances are it’s Arturs Saburovs ’10.
“I wear my SLU clothing and refer to my St. Lawrence experience almost daily,” the proud Laurentian says. “I am extremely grateful for what SLU has given me and I cannot wait for the day I come to Reunion and share my experience with my classmates and even assist current students.”
The
English and
government major is a manager at an international translation company. “I manage Swedish language translators who translate mostly European Union (EU) documents,” he says, noting that there are 23 official EU languages. “I am getting private and corporate world insights through this job, which I enjoy.”
His experience at St. Lawrence helps him in all aspects of his life.
“At St. Lawrence, I learned to think critically and assess arguments,” he says. “I remain politically active in my country and I help in the fight for LGBT equality.” He helped organize the first safe and successful Baltic Pride and assisted with the bid to host EuroPride 2015 in Riga, Latvia, which was “a major victory for Latvia,” he says.
Arturs is also a volunteer for the EducationUSA center in Latvia. “I have spoken at a number of seminars, assisted many individual prospective students and shared my SLU experience with so many,” he says.
“I tell students, ‘Don’t waste a minute. You will love St. Lawrence and you will become part of the amazing family of Laurentians. St. Lawrence developed and grew my mind and spirit.’”
