Economics and mathematics major Victor
Kai-Rogers ’08 in academic and cultural programs. Victor,
from Freetown, Sierra Leone, was seeking a small school where he
would “be recognized as a person.” St. Lawrence was a
perfect match and he’s doing his part to recognize
the individual cultures that are represented among the student body.
Last year, Victor organized a music-dance-theatre-performance program
called Kaleidoscope that showcased diversity on campus by
bringing together different student groups on one stage. Having attended
an international high school, Victor felt a need “to bridge
the gap between various student organizations on campus-domestic
and international,” he says. Students loved the idea,
though Victor says his biggest challenge was the fact that most students
at St. Lawrence are very active. “It was difficult to bring
people together at one place at one time,” he remembers. The
event was a huge success and Victor plans to continue Kaleidoscope
as an annual event on a grander scale.
Victor’s fascination with diversity and internationalism does
not end with Kaleidoscope. Victor received a University
Fellowship for Summer 2006 to work with Dr. Peter Fitzrandolph
from the economics department on research entitled ‘Export
Subsidy Debate-A Look at the Agreement on Export Subsidy Debate in
the WTO.’ Victor’s academic interest lies in international
trade and he hopes his summer research will become his senior year
project.
In his free time from research and organization, Victor works as
a community assistant, performs with the Laurentian Singers,
and organizes some more events with African Students’ Union.
After graduation, Victor intends to work for two or three years
then go back to school to get a doctorate degree on a topic
related to international trade or finance.
