Jane Mutoru '06

Jane Mutoru '06 wanted to explore liberal arts through an international education and found St. Lawrence to be the best place to do so. Jane, of Nyahururu, Kenya, and a graduate of Moi Girls' High School in Eldoret, Kenya, says, "St. Lawrence offers meaningful opportunities to its students--from research to study abroad to leadership, the possibilities are limitless."

Jane spent the spring of 2005 studying in Denmark, where enrolled in the Medical Practice and Policy Program. She stayed for the summer; through a St. Lawrence travel grant she enrolled in "The Understanding and Treatment of HIV and AIDS in Denmark, the UK, France and the Netherlands." She visited patient groups and support organizations in Copenhagen, London, Paris and Amsterdam, giving her a better understanding of HIV and AIDS, a topic that she is passionate about.

As a chemistry major and mathematics and European studies double minor, Jane spent much of her time at St. Lawrence conducting research with faculty. She received a fellowship from the chemistry department, allowing her to conduct research with Prof. Nadia Marano on human t-cells. A subsequent foundation-funded fellowship allowed her to continue her research and present it at a national conference in Atlanta.

Additionally, Jane was active in the American Chemical Society, the African Student Union, the Gospel Choir and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. She was a Community Assistant on the Scholars' Floor, an Orientation leader and a member of Phi Beta Kappa honorary. Jane lived in International House, where students who are interested and involved in international affairs live together and learn more about the world from each other.

Jane works for Population Action International, a research and advocacy organization in Washington, D.C., and plans to attend graduate school in public health next fall.
