Veronika Horvathova '12

“My photos depict the life and world around me,” says Veronika Horvathova ’12.
The Bratislava, Slovakia, native shared her art with St. Lawrence when her solo exhibit “Beauty in Detail: Art in Travel” was featured in the University’s Richard F. Brush Art Gallery in 2011.

Veronika’s photography is about the little things she sees in her travels.  “I’m not a photographer you’ll find taking pictures of monuments,” she says. “I want to capture cultures and differences. The people of the world and their natural surroundings fascinate me.”

After the exhibition, Veronika went back to Slovakia and found a café that wanted to showcase her photos. “I wanted my art to be where people could enjoy it and now it is in the most perfect place,” she says.

Veronika, a government major, is one of the few students not majoring in the arts to have their own exhibit in the Gallery.  “I had a lot of support from the Art Gallery director and from my professors,” she says. “At St. Lawrence, I’ve been able to pursue the two things I love most: politics and photography.”

She was able to enjoy both during semesters in the University’s Francophone program and the Washington, D.C program. Veronika’s political passion, as well a couple of her professors, helped her get the opportunity to present a paper she had written at the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Conference in Istanbul in 2011. She was the only undergraduate to present research.

Her last semester at St. Lawrence was her first in the real world. Veronika now works as a media researcher/analyst at the South Korean Embassy in Slovakia. “At St. Lawrence, I knew I wanted a career in international relations and I can’t imagine a more perfect first job that allows me to work with the most exciting and powerful political people in my country. I’m honored,” she says.
