Akintunde Akinmade ’06 sees U.S. foreign policy in action. As a program associate with the Meridian International Center in Washington, DC, he travels extensively. One highlight of his career has been an internship at the U.S. Embassy in London. “I was in the ambassador's office and I was able to see U.S. foreign policy in action,” he says. “Another highlight was successfully handling a high-profile project called the Edward R. Murrow Program for Journalists.
“Tunde,” who majored in economics and government, says, “Model UN [in college] was a nice introduction to international affairs, a subject I am interested in still. I was proud to be inducted into honor societies like Omicron Delta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha,” the government honorary.
“Studying abroad was the quintessential St. Lawrence experience for me,” says the native of Salt Lake City. “I was with about 20 other St. Lawrence students in London. It seems a little over the top to say ‘the experience changed my life,’ but I think it's entirely possible that it did. Every student should study abroad--that's one of the few things I can say unequivocally.
“College helped give me focus, but it didn't provide all the answers,” says Tunde candidly. The Who’s Who electee explains, “The St. Lawrence experience gave me valuable tools that I'm sure I will use throughout my career, but I want students to know it's okay to explore and still not be sure entirely where you want to go in terms of your career, even after graduating.”
