In June 2009, I travelled to Philadelphia to attend The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program's week-long "National Instructor Training Institute," a seminar for college instructors who bring college students and incarcerated people together in learning environments. The program included visits to several city jails and to the state prison at Graterford, where we met with the Graterford Think Tank, the group of inmates who originally conceived the Inside-Out program. Our workshops dealt with everything from nuts and bolts to national advocacy, from subjects like the pedagogy of prison teaching to issues like struggle to end the culture of street crime. It was a rewarding week, well-spent-- thank you, CTL!
