May Faculty College
The May Faculty College offers an extended period of time for faculty to build upon teaching and learning issues addressed throughout the year by the CTL. In collaboration with other programs (e.g., FYP, CBL, IT) the CTL coordinates a series of workshops to explore new ideas, share experiences, and enjoy time spent together in earnest conversation about our profession.

General Education 2.0: Exploring Essential Literacies
Tuesday, May 20-Thursday, May 22, 2008
The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) defines general education as the central shared educational experiences for all students regardless of their majors or minors. At St. Lawrence University, in addition to the First-Year Program, the distribution and diversity requirements meet this criterion. But do our distribution and diversity requirements actually meet our expectations for a contemporary liberal education?
This year’s May College affords us the opportunity to begin in-depth discussions about specific learning outcomes for all students, curricular and pedagogical approaches to achieve those learning outcomes, and analytical and integrative practices for the assessment of student learning in our current and future general education curricula. The May College 2008 program will encourage preliminary explorations of what it means to be literate in a global society. Literacy in the 21st century is not only about conventional text-based literacy but also includes technology and media applications and extends into visual, quantitative, civic and intercultural realms of knowledge. These literacies should not compete in a curriculum but rather should complement one another; indeed, “the effectiveness of liberal education is in its entirety; not in any discrete part” (AAC&U’s Purposeful Pathways).
Let’s begin now to consider the following question and plan to actively engage in generating preliminary answers during May College:
How do we intend to comprehensively and coherently address critical literacies in the St. Lawrence curriculum?

Call for Proposals - May College 2008
Dear Colleagues,
At this year’s May College (May 20-22, 2008) we will discuss our aspirations for specific learning outcomes for all St. Lawrence students and explore what it means to be literate in a global society.
It is time to consider submitting a session proposal for this year's May College: General Education 2.0 - Exploring Essential Literacies. The submission deadline is not until February 18 so I hope that provides ample time to brainstorm and collaborate with colleagues on a wide range of interesting, energizing sessions.
If you have questions as you begin planning, please be in touch with me or any member of the May College Planning Committee:
