What is CSTEP?
CSTEP is a New York State Education Department
initiative designed to provide services to students from underrepresented
populations who are seeking careers in the sciences, mathematics,
technological fields, and the licensed professions.
What will CSTEP do for me?
CSTEP provides the following services:
- Counseling academic, career, and personal
- Career Development exploring graduate
school programs and career options
- Tutoring tutoring through the University
tutoring center as well as preparation assistance for GREs, MCATs, or
LSATs
- Leadership Opportunities leadership skills
are developed and selected CSTEP Group Leaders receive a stipend for their
time, skills, and efforts
- Conference Opportunities career awareness
and graduate school conferences are encouraged and funded
- Newsletter events, programs, student
recognition and information that affect CSTEP students are posted monthly
in a CSTEP newsletter
- Travel monetary assistance for travel to
colleges visits, job application interviews, and conferences is provided
- Internships research and work-experience
internships are encouraged and arranged with monetary reimbursement for
travel available when necessary
- Group Travel transportation is provided
to selected academic-related cultural programs or career-exploration
programs
- Networking students may interact at monthly
group meetings, programs, area college programs and a statewide CSTEP
conference
- Technology a student computer, a scanner,
laser printer, color printer, and a camera as well as a CSTEP laptop computer ar
e available for student use
- Workshops workshops in computer skills,
resume writing, internship selection, cover letter writing, interviewing,
dining etiquette for job interviews, and similar programs are organized
for students
Do I qualify?
Student Eligibility
- Students need to be New York State residents
enrolled full-time at St. Lawrence University.
- Students must have an interest in a career in the
sciences, mathematics, technological fields or any of the licensed professions
in New York State.
- Students must be members of an underrepresented
population in those fields. The underrepresented populations are African
American, Native American, Hispanic American, and Alaskan Native
students

- Students must meet low-income guidelines set by
New York State.
CSTEP students are among the finest the University
has. One additional eligibility requirement at St. Lawrence is the
maintenance of a base 2.5 overall grade point average for all but entering
students.
