GRADUATE SCHOOL FAIRS

Text Box: FAREWELL TO RHONDA
Text Box: Rhonda Furgison recently announced her resignation from the McNair program due to another job opportunity she could not pass up. Rhonda has been the McNair part-time secretary since the fall of 2003 and has created the program budget and forms, worked on files and record keeping for the program and supplied the information that generated checks for faculty and students.
Text Box: She has been a reliable staff member and hard worker, and she has been a loyal supporter of the program and the students. Needless to say, she will be missed! Rhonda is moving on to a full time position with vacations and benefits—something she and her family agreed would be a good move for her.
Her last day is November 5. Please take a moment to wish her well next time you are in the office.

McNair and CSTEP program students took advantage of two recent opportunities to be involved in a graduate school fair. The first event was held on October 8 and 9 at the University of Buffalo. It was entitled the Seventh Bi-Annual Statewide Student Graduate School Awareness Conference: “Beyond the bachelors Degree.”

Attending from St. Lawrence were seniors Laura Duran and Paul Ohri, sophomores Sahiry Rodriguez and Aaron Vanevery, and first year students Tenesia Booker and Brandi King. We all rode together in a van and made the five hour trip go a little faster with some car and word games.

There was a number of workshops regarding preparation for graduate school, the process of applying, financing graduate school , preparing for standardized tests, and some perspectives from current graduate students. We talked with two SLU alumni who work at the University of Buffalo. One was Adrian Jones from the Office of Graduate Medical Education who spent some time with our pre-med students and seniors and Manulito Loman,  a

graduate student in the Department of Information and Library Sciences. Manulito had lunch with part of our group.

The event ended with a keynote speech followed by a graduate school fair. The guest speaker, Dr. Robert Belle, reminded all of us of our responsibility to the programs that are funding education. He spoke to students who have been utilizing opportunities offered by such programs as CSTEP and McNair challenging them to be sure to complete requirements and give back when they have graduated. Dr. Belle offered concerns that if students do not take on the responsibilities of meeting program requirements, these programs won’t be around to help future students.

On October 21, McNair Seniors were invited to participate in their first Virtual Graduate School Fair presented by George Washington University. The seniors went online with  a large number of McNair Scholars from across the United States to learn about programs available and get questions answered about applying.
