Text Box: The Harvey Milk School for LGBT students opened its doors this fall in New York City, and Sydney Seifert jumped at the opportunity to do her McNair research project on it. Small wonder. The CSTEP/McNair senior with a major in sociology has been actively involved in LGTB issues for years.
Take her internship with the LGBT Community Center last summer where she helped put together a PRIDE event and organized a large fund raiser. Or there’s her involvement the National Alliance of Women’s Organizations in London last April. How about her leadership on campus as the coordinator of Text Box: the Women’s Resource Center and her membership in PRIDES? There’s no question but that Sydney is connected with issues of gender. In fact, she is currently doing an internship with CAVA here in Canton.
Sydney even went to Trinidad on a grant to study women’s empowerment and objectification during Carnival.
A New York City native, Sydney is looking to find work for a year and then go on to graduate school with the hope of finding a position that Text Box: helps people and makes a difference in their lives.
Her favorite professor is Dr. Margaret Bass. “I could listen to Margaret talk for hours. She’s made me think and question ideas that I never thought to. She’s helped me get through four years here, and I can’t imagine having to have been here without her strong presence.”
Speaking of those four years, Sydney, who was also a HEOP Summer Mentor, has a little advice to pass on to underclassmen: “It’s four years. . . Just do it. When times get hard, just think about the end.”
Text Box: them doing well.
