Text Box: Mysterious? Enigma? Clearly the type to shun public attention, D. M. Ramos is a senior who has defied categorization. The sociology major aims to continue his education in a graduate program hoping to work in the area of communication development. Ask him why, and he says, “I want to be a tour guide in New York City.” Perhaps it comes as no surprise that his favorite book is Alice in Wonderland?
As a McNair Scholar, Ramos appreciated the opportunity to have independent thought apart from class work, and he has attended three sociology conferences that have helped him see the value of indeText Box: pendent research and thinking. He credits a number of faculty members for their inspiration including Dr. Ron Flores, Dr. Barry Torres, Dr. Margaret Bass, Dr. Karen O’Neil (who was his McNair mentor), Dr. Traci Ford-Hernandez, and Dr. Danielle Egan.
Involved in the University Chorus and Laurentians for three years, he also has balanced his musical activities most recently with membership in the juggling club. His student leadership has included overseeing the AchievText Box: ing Moments study time in Whitman Hall. Ramos has also taken advantage of travel opportunities afforded him and has been to New Mexico, California, Canada, New Jersey and Florida. He explains that a missed opportunity to go to Sapelo Island was a formative life lesson for him.
Recognized on the HEOP Wall of Fame, Ramos considers himself to be a citizen of the world and explains to peers that “Environment is the key to self control.”

Text Box: What is the CSTEP Statewide Conference and how to apply
Text Box: search and wishes to enter the poster competition. I also wish to have seniors who have not attended get first dibs at going. If past years are any indicator, I have taken some first year students and several non-poster presenters—so I would suggest you apply if you are at all interested. I have had to go to a waiting list at the last minute because a member fell ill, so even having your name on the waiting list can be good.
At the posh Sagamore Resort in Lake George, all students Text Box: will experience a professional conference. Appropriate dress is business attire. Additionally all students are expected to get up early for the events on both Saturday and Sunday and attend all workshops. It is not a weekend when you can skip a workshop to do a paper. Students who have attended will tell you that this is an experience you wouldn’t want to miss. Check with Jeovanni,
Text Box: CSTEP members will notice a very tight deadline asking you to think carefully but quickly about your plans for mid April. On April 16—18, CSTEP students from around the state will gather for the 12th year in a row to network, to see each other’s research, and to attend workshops designed to assist you in your career planning.
The conference is the highlight of the year, and all members are invited to apply. Because I have to narrow the applicants down to four or five students, I generally look to providing the opportunity first to any student who has done reText Box: Page 2
