7:30 p.m.
Hepburn Auditorium
David Beito, Professor of History at the University of Alabama will speak on his recent book, co-authored with his wife Linda Royster Beito, entitled Black Maverick: T. R. M. Howard's Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power. Drawing from dozens of interviews with Howard's friends and contemporaries, as well as FBI files, court documents, and private papers, the authors present a fittingly vibrant portrait of a complicated civil rights leader, iconoclastic businessman, and tireless activist. Beito is the author of three books and his research has been published in a variety of academic journals. In 2007, he was appointed to chair the Alabama State Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights.
