Importance Notice

It is the responsibility of each individual student to access the proper resources to get and from their placement site. The CBL staff, professor, and the community partner supervisor are NOT responsible for providing transportation. The Community Mentor will not serve as the Certified Driver for the SLU vehicle, unless instructed by the CBL staff. If after all attempts to secure transportation (as listed below) have been unsuccessful or there are transportation concerns, please contact the CBL office immediately at cbl@stlawu.edu.

Over Five Miles from Campus - GROUP TRAVEL

When the placement site is located over five miles from campus AND requires group travel, the CBL office will automatically reserve a SLU vehicle for students’ use. While we cannot mandate students, it is strongly encouraged that all students traveling become SLU Certified Drivers. This does not apply to students who are under 18 years of age and/or do not hold a valid US issued driver’s license, (University liability insurance will not cover such cases.) Driver Certification training will be part of the CBL Student On-Campus Orientation. If a student misses the on-campus orientation or there was not one scheduled for the placement, the student must follow the instructions for Driver Certification Training.  Please Note: If a student is instructed to travel in a university vehicle, but chooses to use a personal vehicle, they will NOT be eligible to receive any form of reimbursement for travel costs AND must complete liability forms. See Personal Car/Carpooling.

Within Five Miles from Campus - GROUP TRAVEL

When the placement site is within five miles from campus and requires group travel, a SLU vehicle is not automatically reserved; however, if the group has a University Certified Driver, they may request to utilize a SLU vehicle. For more information, see Instructions on Reserving a University Vehicle and Driver Certification Training. Please Note: If a student is instructed to travel in a university vehicle, but chooses to use a personal vehicle, they will NOT be eligible to receive any form of reimbursement for travel costs AND must complete liability forms. See Personal Car/Carpooling.

Within Five Miles from Campus - INDIVIDUAL TRAVEL
When the placement site is within five miles from campus and does not require group travel, a student should use the following forms of transportation: personal vehicle, walking, green bike, or a local taxi.

Personal Car/Carpooling

Generally, the CBL office prefers that students utilize a SLU vehicle, a green bike, a taxi, or walking AND discourages carpooling given the potential liability risks. While we cannot stop students from utilizing their own personal vehicle or carpooling, the CBL office does require Transportation Waivers to cover liability risks for both the driver and rider. Transportation Waivers are available online: https://www.stlawu.edu/community-based-learning/resource/transportation-waivers

Mileage Reimbursement

If a University vehicle is not available on the day/time a placement is scheduled, students may be given permission to utilize a personal vehicle (which they are an insured driver for).  If given permission, the student may be eligible for Mileage Reimbursement to a maximum of $100 per placement per semester. To apply, please complete the online Mileage Reimbursement Application located at the forms link above.

If mileage reimbursement is approved, the student will need download a Mileage Log and keep track of mileage during the entire semester. At the end of the semester, the student must email a completed/approved Student Time Log to cbl@stlawu.edu and submit the completed Mileage Log online through the Online Mileage Log Submission Form available at the form link above by the Monday of finals week. Please Note: Reimbursement is only available until funds are depleted.

Walking/Green Bikes/Taxi

If within walking distance and weather permits, the student is encouraged to walk or utilize a Green Bike from the Science Library www.stlawu.edu/library/content/green-bikes-program-seasonal.

If within five miles from campus, a local taxi service may be available if the student calls and arranges trips in advance. To set up taxi arrangements, call Canton Taxi, 315-714-498.
