Volunteer Opportunities Enhance a SLU Student Experience

Written By: Jordan Sheridan '17

At St. Lawrence University, the Volunteer Services Office plays a variety of important roles in students' social and academic lives on campus. Ashlee Downing, Volunteer Services coordinator, also has a large influence on the students at SLU. Without her passion, expertise, and positivity, there wouldn’t be half as many wonderful opportunities for students as there are today.

One day we could be tie-dying t-shirts on the old Java Quad for Pride week and the next we could be designing cardstock for a “Random Act of Kindness” project. The office's main goal is to provide students, faculty, and staff members with opportunities to better the surrounding community and better life on campus through volunteer work. We offer weekly events like Campus Kitchen, SLU Buddies and Reading Buddies, as well as one time opportunities like Make A Difference Day, letter writing for Veterans, cookie baking, and much more. Volunteer Services maintains a very good relationship with NYSARC and the first Friday of each month we send students to work the dance they host.

For Make a Difference Day, we send groups of students into Canton to clean up and rake leaves in parks, at churches, and for some elders of the community. This year we added two new monthly events. During December, a group of students baked cookies for Maplewood Campus in Canton and then in February we created a “Random Act of Kindness” day.

The Volunteer Services Office oversees a multitude of clubs and organizations, some of them being MAASV (Male Athletes Against Sexual Violence), LGBT Etc., Habitat for Humanity, ROTORACT, and Circle K. We promote events put on by these clubs and organizations and provide assistance in any way possible.

This spring, Ashlee had three student interns working under her. Lauren Carey, a Junior and Kathleen Sears, a senior were the marketing interns, and Jordan Sheridan, a junior, was the special events intern. The entire office makes a point of being in attendance for a majority of the events put on by the clubs and organizations the office overseas, especially Relay for Life.

Volunteer Services puts out a monthly calender with event dates, times, and information on it, as well as the point of contact for those events. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please send us an email at volunteerservices@stlawu.edu. Please reach out if you would like to talk more about what we do as an office.

Please help us reach our goal of enhancing your volunteering experience as a member of St. Lawrence University
