Bittersweet Farm

Agency and Placement Location: 1249 State Hwy 184, Heuvelton, NY 13654 (25 miles from campus, 45 min drive)

Transportation: A university van is reserved for this placement on Sunday's. Students need to complete and pass SLU's Driver Certification Training in order to utilize this transportation.

Mission:  According to the farm owners, Ann and Brian Bennett, the mission of Bittersweet Farm is "To culturally link the work of the day and community with the life sustaining world around us through small scale, diversified agriculture. The farm has also pledged to be committed to caring locally and meeting organic principles as well as education others about natural methods and rhythms rather than by mechanical principles.

Projects:

  • Tending to farm animals (chickens, pigs, sheep, cows, horses, etc.)
  • Constructing and moving fencing
  • Carpentry projects
  • Seedlings in greenhouse
  • Other various farm projects

Required Dress, Paperwork, and Training: Students will be working outdoors in all kinds of weather so appropriate dress such as the following is required. NOTE: if you are not dressed appropriately, you are not prepared; if you are not prepared, you are not productive! DO NOT WEAR: LEGGINGS OR ANKLE SOCKS

  • Warm, closed-toe/waterproof boots or muck boots
  • Hat
  • LAYERS of clothing that can get dirty
  • Gloves - especially on cold/rainy/snowy days
