Planning Ahead - Communication Information
It won't take long for you to discover that within both academic and social circles at St. Lawrence, the ability to communicate quickly and effectively is hugely important. Utilizing our email resources is the sure fire way to stay on top of things and is the official means of all University communication. The first step is to create your SLU Network Password, then head over to our Email Services page for more information
For really knowing what’s going on across the University community, you will need to consult SLUWire at sluwire.stlawu.edu. SLUWire is the place to find out what’s happening in the SLU Community; it's where university offices, campus organizations, associations, and fellow Laurentian’s find and share information about campus happenings. You’ll want to check in everyday…as there is a lot going on here!
The Student Mail Center (SMC) is located on the first floor of the Sullivan Student Center. The SMC dispenses mail and parcels to St. Lawrence students. Students are assigned a combination-operated mailbox that is kept throughout their time at St. Lawrence (visit the Student Mail Center website for more information on how to locate your SMC box number).
The SMC will accept prepaid outbound UPS, FedEx and USPS parcels. You can find UPS and FedEx drop boxes on the ground floor of Vilas Hall and a UPS drop box at the rear entrance to the Sullivan Student Center. The Brewer Bookstore will also accept pre-paid UPS and FedEx shipments.
Most carrier Web sites provide the capability to print prepaid shipping labels. Here are some options:
- United Parcel Service (UPS): www.ups.com
- Federal Express (FedEx): www.fedex.com
- United States Postal Service (USPS): www.usps.com
Stamps can be purchased from the following locations:
- The SMC window, with your Community Wide Account (CWA) only
- The Mail & Go Kiosk outside the SMC near the water fountains with a debit or credit card.
- North Country Savings Bank branch office or the ATM machines which are located on the first floor of Student Center and at the entrance of the Brewer Bookstore.
The Mail & Go Kiosk located outside the SMC can help you to mail your domestic packages as well as purchase stamps. The Kiosk is available for use 24/7. When you complete your purchase your letters and packages can be placed into the metal receptacle next to it. This is a great way to purchase postage when the SMC is not open. Mail is picked up from here Monday through Friday at 1:00 PM.
To ship belongings to your SMC mailbox at St. Lawrence, address the packages as follows:
SMC # (will be sent to you in mid-July)
St. Lawrence University
23 Romoda Drive
Canton, NY 13617
We prefer that you ship items after you receive your SMC box number; however, if you must ship package(s) sooner, clearly mark your parcel with the words “Incoming New Student.” More information is available on the SMC website.
It is imperative that we have an accurate home mailing address on file for all students. Please contact the Student Life office at 315-229-5311, to notify us of any change of address for you or your parent/guardian.
Students may receive free in-bound faxes at the Student Mail Center (SMC) (315-229-5515). The cover page must include the student’s name and SMC number to ensure delivery. Students can send faxes from the Brewer Bookstore for a fee.
In-room Telephone Service
Each residence hall room is equipped with local telephone service requiring a basic corded telephone. Long-distance calls require a calling card. Calling cards may be purchased at the Brewer Bookstore.
Mobile Phone Service
Verizon and AT&T provide the best local service. Other carriers such as Sprint will work in the Canton area; however, coverage is inconsistent. Please consult with your carrier for regional coverage information.
