Intercollegiate athletics and recreation offers a minor in sports studies and exercise science (SSES) for students wishing to pursue interests in such areas as sport philosophy, sport sociology, sport psychology, sports medicine, health and fitness and sport management. Department courses at the 100 and 200 levels do not have prerequisites, but SSES courses fill with students from the upper classes before first-year students register. Therefore, first-year students who intend to minor in sports studies and exercise science should try to complete their distribution requirements early in their careers and pursue courses in the minor later on, primarily during their junior and senior years. The department also offers a series of half-unit courses—SSES 100: Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness, and SSES 100S: Aquatics—which you may wish to take after your first year.

Courses offered in the fall appropriate for first-year students, subject to the availability of seats, are:

  • SSES 115: Intro to Kinesiology
