Buddhism

This course will introduce students to the Buddhist religious tradition with major emphasis on Theravada Buddhism. Particular attention is given to the practice of Buddhism in Thailand, with some references to other SE Asian countries as well. The course includes field trips to selected Buddhist temples and monasteries within Thailand.

Introduction to Hinduism

Students are introduced to the Hindu religious tradition as found on the Indian sub-continent. The course takes an historical approach to investigate the emergence of Hindu spirituality since its beginnings to the present time. Since the Indian culture exerted immense influence on the cultures of SE Asia, Hindu values are also present in the traditions of Thailand. The course is roughly divided into three periods: ancient, medieval and modern.

Globalization and the Greater Mekong Sub-Region

Globalization is international integration. But not all countries and all people benefit equally from globalization. There are winners and losers. The dynamics between diversity and globalization and its relevance in different regions of world will be examined. The international business and globalization will also be examined, including the ways in which international businesses differ from domestic businesses and how international business growth has accelerated.

Contemporary Burma/Myanmar

This course is designed for students who would like to learn about political, economic and social development in Burma/Myanmar. The goal is to introduce the students to Burma/Myanmar's quest for democracy, its ethnic politics, civil society, economy, health, education and foreign relations. By the end of the course, students will be able to answer why the country's name is so contested, why Burma has been under military rule for so many years, and why such a resource-rich country has become so poor.
