Introduction to the History of Modern Kenya

in
This course analyses how the colonial history has shaped the state of modern Kenya by examining the most important themes in the history of Kenya from the colonial period to the present. The course covers the following topics: background to the colonial period; the scramble and partitioning of Africa; impact of colonialism; the rise of nationalism; the coming of independence; and developments in contemporary Kenya.

Biodiversity Conservation and Management in East Africa

This course is designed to provide students with information about tropical biology and to suggest ways of slowing down or reversing the rapid loss of biological diversity in East Africa. It evaluates the efforts and approaches being undertaken by governments, conservation organizations and communities in East Africa to improve the environment while trying to uplift the living standards of the people.

Eligibility

  • Students must have completed at least one course with significant Africa or diaspora content prior to participation.
  • Open to sophomore, junior and senior students with appropriate academic preparation, motivation, and interest in a relevant area.

Admission to this program is based on the quality of application. Candidates must present a coherent academic rationale for participation in the Kenya Semester Program and a record of academic performance that demonstrates the ability to meet the challenges of studying in Kenya.

Program Costs

Students participating in the Kenya program pay regular St. Lawrence University comprehensive fees. The comprehensive fee covers tuition, room and board, and program-integrated field components.

If you receive financial aid, your normal financial aid is applied. Contact the Financial Aid Office if you would like information about additional loans for extra costs associated with studying on this program.
