The Thai and Southeast Asian Studies program, housed at Payap University, is a separate program within the university, run on a American calendar with courses offered in English and designed for international students from the U.S., Australia and other parts of Asia. Typically about 25 students participate each semester.
Students take 6 credits of Thai language, a 3-credit course on ‘Cultural Foundations of Thai Society' (which includes field trips and rural home stays); a 1-credit course on intercultural study; and 2 electives. Students must take a minimum of 14 credits, the equivalent of a semester at St. Lawrence.
For Fall 2009, electives will include:
Socially Engaged Buddhism
Introduction to Hinduism
Other electives may include: Globalization and Southeast Asia, Understanding Thai Art by Creating it, Contemporary Burma/Myanmar.
Students will be able to get credit in Asian Studies, Modern Languages, Global Studies, and probably in history, government, or fine arts (all courses still need departmental approval).
