Florence is the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany, and of the province of Florence. The city is situated on the Arno River and, with a population of close to 365,000 people, it is the largest in the region.

Florence is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, its art and architecture being of particular significance. A center of medieval European trade and finance, Florence is often considered the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance; in fact, it has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.
