Program Details

St. Lawrence University's affiliation with the Syracuse Program in Florence was formed primarily to provide Fine Arts majors and minors with a study abroad option that has a wide range of courses in European art history and studio arts. This is the only SLU program which provides courses in studio arts.

• SLU students with interests in other areas must make an especially strong case for why the Italy program complements and extends their particular academic focus.

All students are strongly encouraged to apply to an additional program which may also serve their interests. (This will not jeopardize their Italy application in any way.)  Fine Arts students should be aware that all of the SLU Europe programs have art history courses, museum site teaching, and field excursions which focus on art and architecture. And the London Program offers internships in galleries and museums which are of interest to Fine Arts students.  In addition, there are a number of Fine Arts courses offered at various ISEP institutions.

Admission to the program is based on the quality of application.  Candidates must present a coherent academic rationale for participation in the Italy Program and a record of academic performance that demonstrates ability to meet the challenges of off-campus study. Normally, this means a GPA of at least 2.8, but the selection committee considers closely the candidate's rationale for participation and academic record as a whole.  Candidates for the Italy Program must also present evidence of maturity, responsibility and cultural sensitivity.  Students must have taken more than one course which specifically prepares them to pursue their declared interests on this program.

Students applying to the Studio Arts program are required to submit a slide portfolio consisting of 12 - 15 slides of recent work on a CD and must have completed FA 121 and, preferably, additional studio courses. 

Students currently on disciplinary, social, or academic probation are not eligible to apply for, or participate in, off-campus study programs.  In addition, students with outstanding disciplinary fines, service hours and/or education program requirements are not eligible to participate in the program.
