Italy Academics

St. Lawrence students study at the Syracuse University (SU) Center where most courses are taught in English. Any student interested in the intensive language program or in direct enrollment at the University of Florence should talk to the staff in the SLU Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) about those options.

In preparing their applications and planning their semester in Florence, St. Lawrence students should consider which of the following curricular options best suits their situation:
a. Art History/Fine Arts - Each fall semester 15 - 20 art history courses are offered in Florence at the SU Center. Art history students may register for studio arts courses, but priority is given to art program students.
b. Studio Arts - Students in the art program are expected to register for 6 - 9 credits of studio courses. Based on portfolio review and areas of interest, students will be placed at the SU Center or in the Florentine studios.
c. Humanities and Social Science students - Students who are not Fine Arts majors, who have taken a significant number of courses to establish their interest for study in Italy, must take at least one art history course while participating in the program.

All students MUST take a total of 15 credits. Students will receive 6 credits (1.66 SLU units) for the Italian course + lab. Other courses are 3 credits (.83 SLU unit). Therefore, students will take Italian and 3 other courses.
