Musical Encounters in the Francophone World

Popular music in France has been enriched in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries by the influence of Roma music, American jazz, rock and roll, and hip hop, and musics born of the French colonial experience in Africa and the Caribbean.  In this First Year Seminar, we will build on our opportunities to hear music in Quebec, Rouen, Paris, and Dakar to research the rich interactions that have shaped, and continue to shape, both French popular music and musics around the world that have been influenced by French culture.  This study will culminate in the production of a research essay that will evolve through a series of steps from bibliography through final draft to develop students' skills as academic researchers and writers.
