St. Lawrence University
Washington Semester Program
Receiving SLU grades for Washington Semester Program
- All St. Lawrence University students on the WSP must do a research
project as 1 of the 4 credits earned through the Washington Semester
Program. As part of the application process, students are asked to formulate
a plan for a research project. A student should design his/her research
project in consultation with an SLU faculty member. During the semester
in Washington DC, a member of the Washington Semester Program faculty works
with the student to refine the topic, providing advice and giving feedback
at various stages of the project. The WSP faculty member assesses the final
project and determines the final grade.
- Whatever a student's major, he/she must complete the prerequisites
required of the individual programs prior to participation in the WSP.
- It is the responsibility of individual students to check with departments
and with the Registrar about how credits will be transferred back to St.
Lawrence and credited toward majors. At the current time (August, 2007),
departments give the following credit for the programs:
- Economics majors: Credit toward the major is available for
the Economic Policy program as well as the International Trade and Business
program. Two (2) units can count toward the major as 200-level economics
electives.
- English majors: One unit of academic credit toward the major
is available to students in the Journalism program. With the prior approval
of the department chair, a second unit may be available to those students
who do an independent research project appropriate for the major.
- Environmental Studies majors: Two units of academic credit
toward the major are available to students in the International Environment
and Development program.
- Government majors: Two units of academic credit toward the
major are available to students in the American Law, Foreign Policy,
International Law and Organizations, Public Law, and Transforming
Communities programs. The Government Department does not
give credit for the Justice program. The department may give credit for certain internships and/or an independent
research project in the Journalism program.
- Sociology majors: Two units of academic credit toward the major
are available in the Justice program and Transforming Communities.
