The academic director offers a field-based advanced topic unit in conservation biology -- BIO 244. Approximately 5 students each semester can participate in this enriching field experience, designed to allow students
to explore in more depth issues raised in the core course.
Special note to SLU biology majors: Biology students in the Kenya Program can earn between 1 and 1.5 units of Biology credit, but only 1 unit will be counted toward fulfilling the biology major requirements.
Students who take BIO242: Biodiversity Conservation and Management in East Africa and BIO244: Advanced Topic Study in Conservation Biology will receive 1.5 unit of biology credit. This credit will not be major credit restricted (MCR). These students will receive only 1 unit of credit for the Core Course African Studies 337/Anthropology 337/Environmental Studies 337: Culture, Environment and Development in East Africa.
Students who take BIO242 without BIO244 will receive 1 unit of biology credit that is MCR and 1.5 units for the Core Course.
Students not choosing the biology unit work independently in placements which are organized by the program (independent field studies). Several of the placements offer interesting and meaningful experiences in biology, environmental studies and pre-med.
Certain field study placements require students to have substantial academic or practical experience, especially those in the sciences and business.
