ACADEMIC PROGRAM/COURSES and CREDIT

Courses
St. Lawrence students study at the Syracuse University (SU) Center where most courses are taught in English. Any student interested in the intensive language program or in direct enrollment at the University of Florence should talk to the staff in the SLU Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) about those options.

In preparing their applications and planning their semester in Florence, St. Lawrence students should consider which of the following curricular options best suits their situation:
a. Art History/Fine Arts - Each fall semester 15 - 20 art history courses are offered in Florence at the SU Center. Art history students may register for studio arts courses, but priority is given to art program students.
b. Studio Art - Students in the art program are expected to register for 6 - 9 credits of studio courses. Based on portfolio review and areas of interest, students will be placed at the SU Center or in the Florentine studios.
c. Humanities and Social Science students - Students who are not Fine Arts majors, who have taken a significant number of courses to establish their interest for study in Italy, must take at least one art history course while participating in the program.

All students MUST take a total of 15 credits. Students will receive 6 credits (1.66 SLU units) for the Italian course + lab. Other courses are 3 credits (.83 SLU unit). Therefore, students will take Italian and 3 other courses.

Italian
Students with one semester of college-level Italian should enroll in ITA 102; students with one year of college-level Italian should enroll in ITA 201; students with three semesters of college-level Italian should enroll in ITA 202; students who have completed two years of college-level Italian should enroll in ITA 325. Placement tests are given during orientation in Florence for students with either high school training or prior experience living in Italy or speaking Italian in the home.

Studio Arts
The Syracuse University (SU) Center art studios are located at piazza Donatello, in an area designated as an "artists' quarter" in 1874. Today there are about 50 studios around the piazza. The studio spaces were designed so that areas of space were left free behind them, allowing natural light to enter; sculpture studios were built on the ground floor, with large doorways to allow the passage of statues.

It is in such traditional, natural light-filled space that students will integrate their experience of visual art in Florence with their own creative interests.

While students may wish to bring their own brushes and other special materials, usually art supplies can be found in Florence . Course fees are included in each course description on the website listed above.

Studio Arts in Florentine Studios
Art students placed in Florentine studios work with local and international students under the tutelage of international faculty and the guidance of Syracuse University's art program coordinator in Florence. Placements in Florentine studios (3 - 6 credits) are available in fiber arts, metalsmithing, printmaking, surface pattern design, and painting restoration. SLU Studio Arts majors need to discuss the transferability of these courses with their SLU advisor before they are included on the Green Transfer Credit form.

In all studios, a lab fee will be charged by SU. The fee amount is $115 - $270 per 3 credits (therefore, a 6-credit studio fee is $230 - $540). Materials for individual work in all studios are provided by the students.

Class attendance is obligatory. Permission to be excused from class is given only in the event of illness. In such cases, the student must report to the program director. When students miss class (even with permission), they will be responsible for the materials covered in their absence.

Students can print out the entire Syracuse University in Italy Academic Packet by going to https://suabroad.syr.edu/programs/location/florence and selecting the Academic Packet for the appropriate fall semester
There is a reference copy of the Packet available in the SLU Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS).

CREDIT
Siena Credits earned in Italy are considered resident credits; therefore, no special residency waivers are required, nor is there any transfer of credit. Students must take take Italian as well as 3 other courses. Grades are averaged into each student's cumulative St. Lawrence G.P.A.

While most courses taught in the Italy Program have been approved for St. Lawrence credit, student must have all courses, except Italian, approved by the appropriate SLU department chair. Both SLU and Syracuse University require students to get their courses pre-approved on the Green Transfer Credit form that is included in their acceptance packets.
