St. Lawrence University
India Program
Orientation
All selected participants from St. Lawrence are required
to attend a series of orientation meetings on campus prior to their departure. Topics
covered in the orientation meetings include discussions of intercultural awareness and
sensitivity, health and safety issues, rudimentary Hindi, dates and the significance of
particular festivals that the students will witness, and the program’s structure and
calendar. An important requirement during the spring semester is to develop -- in
consultation with the SLU on-campus faculty coordinator, the student’s academic
advisor, and the program director --a viable independent fieldwork project.
Students are also required to attend the Consortium weekend orientation held on one of the campuses in April. During that orientation meeting, students will receive a handbook with detailed information. In addition, they present their independent fieldwork proposal to the director and to the other students.
